Re: Croatia's Ghosts Stalk The Balkans Still, Julia Gorin, Jan. 29.
I would like to express our strong protest to the National Post about this column.
The text is insulting to the sovereign state of the Republic of Croatia, its entire nation and certainly to the great number of Croatians who have found a new home in Canada building bridges and friendly ties between our two countries and our two nations.
Such an intentional projection of a negative image of the other nation is in contradiction to the main principles of international relations based on equal sovereign rights for each country and promotion of the practice of tolerance and friendly relations among all nations. Canadian society has always had a leading role in promoting and living such a principle, being an example to the new democracies, such as Croatia.
Over the past 15 years since its independence, Croatia has undertaken numerous initiatives to create a safe and stable democracy based on the rule of law and at the same time sparing no efforts in contributing to the stable and secure region of South East Europe. Today we can proudly say that Croatia belongs to the community of democracies sharing the same values and practices as countries of European Union and NATO, including Canada.
Vesela Mrden Korac, ambassador to Canada of the Republic of Croatia, Ottawa.
